July 2002 - Center for Colon & Digestive Disease is first in North Alabama to introduce Endoluminal Gastroplication, EndoCinch treatment for Gastro Reflux Disease; non-invasive alternative to surgery. This month, Dr. C. Allen Goetsch and Dr. Dino Ferrante of Center for Colon & Digestive Disease performed the first Endoluminal Gastroplication (ELGP) or EndoCinch procedures in North Alabama. This procedure is an innovative minimally-invasive alternative to the open chest surgery called Nissen Fundoplication in the treatment of chronic Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).The new procedure, combining endoscopy technique and the EndoCinch Suturing System can be performed on an outpatient basis under sedation, making it much more convenient and a cost-effective treatment. It involves suturing several plications or "pleats" in the lower esophageal wall or sphincter valve to restrict the regurgitation of stomach acid into the esophagus. Patients who undergo this procedure experience fewer complications and considerably less recovery time. The effectiveness of this new treatment has proven to be very good in comparison to surgery or long-term drug therapy. Four endoluminal gastroplication procedures have been performed, three at CCDD's state-of-the-art Endoscopy Center, and one was performed at a local hospital.
